What is a Deviated Septum?
You probably already know if you have a deviated septum. You’ve been told by your medical doctor or an EENT specialist that the thin piece of cartilage that separates the 2 nostrils is pushed off to one side and affecting your breathing, possibly causing sleep apnea, and worse for your partner, snoring.
What causes a deviated septum?
A lot of patients report to me that they previously had their nose broken or injured while either playing sports, involved in a fight, or from the air bag deploying in a car accident. I personally think that sleeping on your face may also be a possible cause.
How To Check Yourself for a Deviated Septum
Take your thumb and plug one nostril and breathe in. Now switch sides. Is one side significantly more restricted than the other? If so, you might have a deviated septum.
Traditional Medical Care for Deviated Septum
People have been told for years that they need to have deviated septum surgery or septoplasty to get this corrected. That can be not only expensive (thousands of dollars) but down right dangerous from secondary infections and side effects of anesthesia. This is because they have to make an incision in your nose and scrape away cartilage.
What Can Chiropractic Do for a Deviated Septum?
Now that word is getting out that I do a special adjustment on the nasal septum I want you to know exactly what I do. A balloon is attached to a blood pressure cuff and run up the clogged nostril as far as possible. The cuff is then pumped up and as the balloon expands it puts pressure on the septum like a hydraulic jack. Because the septum is flexible it can easily bend back into a more normal position helping the person breathe better, correct sleep apnea, and best of all help with snoring!
How Many Adjustments Does it Take?
Typically I have found that it only takes one session in the office to fix the deviated septum. It just feels like a big pressure inside your nose and takes less than 60 seconds to perform.
What Should I Do Next?
So if you want to breathe better, use a natural approach to fixing sleep apnea, or maybe get your spouse to quit snoring it would be well worth it to come (or send them) down to my office for a visit. I just had a new couple come in this week and they both wanted it done. They could tell right away that their breathing was much improved.
I could save you thousands of dollars and many sleepless nights!
