Car Accident
Helping people recover from the aftermath of a car accident in Colorado is the focus of this site. Here you will find out what to do, what to expect, and how insurance works in Colorado.
Here’s a checklist:
- The first thing you should do is make sure everyone in your vehicle is ok
- Check on the status of the other driver as well
- Call the police so a report can be filed and everyone’s insurance information documented.
- While waiting for the police use your phone to take pictures of the scene and any damage to your vehicle. Also of the other car as well.
- When the police arrive they will ask you if you are injured. Because of the adrenaline you may not notice any pain at this time, but if you do you should definitely go to the ER.
- Is your car still drive-able? If not find out where it will be taken.
- It’s not uncommon to feel very sore and achy the next day. To help minimize this it’s a good idea to APPLY ICE, NOT HEAT to all the affected areas for 20 minutes to reduce swelling, take down inflammation and numb the pain. Heat will actually bring more blood into the area and make it more inflamed. You don’t want this.
- Call your insurance company and tell them you’ve been involved in a car accident. They will give you a claim number for your policy. This is very important! Colorado has what is called “Med Pay”, meaning you should have $5,000 on YOUR policy to cover YOUR treatment. Many people think that since the other driver caused the accident, the other driver’s insurance will pay. That may be the case if it turns out you have no Med Pay coverage but your case will be treated as a lien and not all doctors accept that because payment is rendered when all your care is done. In some cases that could be as long as two years!
- If your symptoms do not go away after the first 24-48 hours talk to a doctor about getting a check up.
Women, especially weighing under 125 pounds, typically will suffer more injuries than men. They should definitely go see a car accident chiropractor, especially if they had a car accident in Denver.
Risk Factors
Wearing a seat belt also increases your risk of injuries even though they do save lives.
Being unaware of the pending car accident also has an increased risk of injury. The neck and spine will experience greater g forces when this happens. Being able to brace yourself prior to the crash will eliminate some of this effect.
Previous injuries or conditions like arthritis, broken bones, small diameter inside the spinal column, advancing age, are all more risk factors for suffering from greater than normal injuries and pain from a car accident.
Pain and symptoms immediately following the accident is another sign of serious injury. Many times people feel fine at the accident but the next day will feel it.
